These videos are the S.S. water blaster videos. We wanted to make a new Super Soaker, we did this project in honor of Black History Month! Our new super soaker has a scope, it was spray painted, and it can shot long distances. We have two videos, on from the Marketing Team, and one from the Documentary Team. We were inspired by Lonny Johnson, the inventor of the super soaker, and we wanted to make it our own.
Mrs. Shyer's fifth grade class has been working on a remake of the super soaker, we were considering the wants and needs for the future, and we were also honoring Lonnie Johnson. There are four teams the marketing team, the build team, the design team, and the documentary team. We have been working hard to recreate the super soaker and present it to the lower school. Here is a little video on the whole process. You can find our recreation in the Dorothy Floyd Library. We are in the midst of a fantastic K-5 project in recognition and celebration of Black History Month in partnership with Señora Hoyos, Mrs. Ivey, and Mrs. Spetnagel. Our Kindergarten through 5th graders are working to innovate on inventions created by African American inventors like Garrett Morgan (stoplight) and Lloyd Ray (dustpan). The goal is for our children to re-invent these items for use in the next generation. We invite you to take a look at our Innoventions Webpage for pictures of our "inGen-eers" in action!
We have been inspired by Los Angeles' very own, Caine Monroy, and have begun playing around with what we might do with the materials and supplies we have access to in the inGen Studio in the hopes of creating our own versions of Caine's Arcade. Currently, only Mrs. Raymer and Mrs. Ralls' classes are participating simply due to space and material constraints, but the other two first grade classes will definitely get their design day as well!
On the first day this invitation was extended, the children's time in the inGen began with Caine's short video. Then we had a brief conversation about what an arcade is and what ideas they had initially for their own games. Then, we jumped right in and started designing. We used the tabletops to make plans and sketches, and quickly abandoned planning for good ol' tinkering. Some of the materials being used are old CDs, cardboard (of course!), used spiral bindings, rubber bands, solo cups, old wires and cables, paper plates, etc. Here are some images that our students might find useful as they begin to plan out how their arcade games might go. Have you heard about Atlanta's upcoming Maker Faire?! Save the date (October 4th and 5th) for a trip around the corner to Decatur so you can tinker, create, and participate in a celebration of the arts, all things DIY and crafty, science, and engineering! Click here to learn more and to see photos from last year's mini Maker Faire.
And, check out this link for a list of the makers who will be set up at the Maker Faire. You may be wondering what it is that we're actually going to do in the inGen Studio this year. Here are a few videos that Ms. Murray and Mrs. Bullock have enjoyed watching as we begin thinking about how to use our cool new environment! |
